Cabinet review finds SIT inputs too sensitive for state-level investigation

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday chaired a high-level Cabinet meeting to review allegations involving Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi, wife of Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Congress in Parliament Gaurav Gogoi, describing the matter as one of grave national concern.
“These are very important allegations. When a sitting MP and the Deputy Leader of the Congress party are involved with Pakistan, the matter becomes far more serious,” the Chief Minister asserted.
The case was initially examined by a Special Investigation Team of the Assam Police, which later registered a formal case at the CID police station. After studying the SIT’s findings, the Cabinet concluded that the scale and sensitivity of the inputs exceed the operational capacity of a state-level investigation.
According to the Chief Minister, the probe may require classified intelligence access, inter-agency coordination, and cross-border jurisdiction capabilities available only with central authorities.
“After examining the report, the state cabinet is of the opinion that the matter should be probed by a central agency. We have decided to refer the case to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further investigation,” he stated, adding, “Only a central agency can handle the investigation properly.”
The government will formally transfer the case once the Ministry of Home Affairs grants approval.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister maintained that the decision is guided by national interest and transparency rather than politics, asserting that the seriousness of the allegations demands an impartial and comprehensive central probe to establish the facts.
