Himanta Moves Gogoi Probe to MHA: Orders Legal Action Against Bhupen Bora

Cabinet cites national security concerns: police action directed over alleged rally misconduct

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has decided to hand over the investigation into alleged links between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan-based elements to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), describing the matter as one with serious national security implications.

The decision followed a detailed presentation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been examining the case. Officials indicated that while substantial material had been gathered, the probe had reached a stage requiring international cooperation, access to sensitive intelligence inputs, and coordination beyond the capacity of a state agency. In view of these constraints, the Cabinet opted for central intervention, with the MHA set to determine the appropriate agency to continue the investigation.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister emphasised that the inquiry is being handled from a security standpoint rather than a political lens. He also raised questions about Gogoi’s past visit to Pakistan, suggesting that travel to sensitive locations typically warrants prior official intimation. A detailed briefing on the investigation’s progress is expected soon.

In a separate development, the Chief Minister directed the Assam Police to initiate legal action against former APCC president Bhupen Bora over alleged indecent conduct during a public rally. Cases have also been ordered against Congress leaders Mira Borthakur and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, who were present at the event.

Moreover, the Chief Minister stated that such conduct had deeply hurt public sentiment, particularly among women, and stressed that leaders holding responsible positions must uphold dignity and decorum at all times. Emphasising accountability, he said no provocation could justify behaviour that undermines public trust or the values expected in public life.

Calling the reported behaviour inappropriate for public representatives, the Chief Minister stated that the matter would additionally be placed before the Assam State Women’s Commission for examination. The Congress has not yet issued an official response.
