Dynamite explosion in East Jaintia Hills triggers rescue, strict action promised

Shillong: At least 18 people were killed, and one was injured after a dynamite explosion tore through an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday, triggering a large-scale rescue and recovery operation. The blast, reported around 11 am, has once again highlighted the dangers associated with unauthorised mining activities in the region.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and mining officials rushed to the site, while the injured person was shifted to the hospital.
Expressing concern over the incident, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said strict action would be taken against those responsible. “Individuals involved in any kind of illegal activities will face action. Whoever is responsible for this incident will not be spared,” he stated.
The Chief Minister emphasised that illegal mining would no longer be tolerated, noting that the introduction of scientific and regulated mining provides lawful avenues for miners. He added that the required steps would be taken after detailed reports are received. He reiterates that strict action would be taken against those involved in illegal operations, asserting that those responsible would not be spared.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, he said, “We are in close coordination with the Government of Meghalaya, and the district administration of East Jaintia Hills.”
The Assam CM further noted that unconfirmed reports suggest that some of the victims may be from Assam. He assured that if this is established, the state would extend all possible assistance and support to the affected families. “In this hour of sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy.” he said.
Authorities are awaiting further details as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
