Nagaon Marks Me-Dam-Me-Phi with Two-Day Tai-Ahom Celebration

District Commissioner leads ancestral tribute as hundreds join colourful cultural procession at Bahagarhmari, highlighting unity, heritage and spiritual legacy

Nagaon: The sacred festival of Me-Dam-Me-Phi, a profound symbol of the Tai-Ahom community’s self-respect and spiritual tradition, was celebrated with grandeur in Nagaon through a two-day programme held on January 30 and 31 at Rohiyal Baruah Khetra in Bahagarhmari.

The event was organised by the Nagaon District Ahom Sabha with the support of the Raha Regional Ahom Sabha, Raha Regional Tai Students’ Union, and local residents, drawing large participation from the community.

District Commissioner Devashish Sharma attended the ceremony as the chief guest and paid homage to the ancestors. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the cultural and historical significance of Me-Dam-Me-Phi and noted that the Ahom legacy continues to strengthen unity and harmony within Assamese society.

A major highlight of the celebration was a vibrant cultural procession, where hundreds of participants dressed in traditional Tai-Ahom attire marched together, creating a colourful and festive atmosphere that reflected pride in heritage and identity.

Several dignitaries were present at the event, including Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department Shri Pinku Majumdar, District Committee President Chao Dibyajyoti,  Dr Dinesh Hazarika, and General Secretary Chao Mahendrajit Baruah. Regional and celebration committee members, along with residents, also took part in the programme.

The celebration not only honoured ancestral traditions but also reinforced the community’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural roots for future generations.
