Singer withdraws from Dhemaji performance citing humiliating remarks and lack of basic arrangements; rapper Shady Mellow voices solidarity and raises similar concerns

Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh–based singer Rito Riba has cancelled his scheduled performance at the 10th Mising Youth Festival in Kareng Chapori, Dhemaji, alleging disrespectful behaviour and unprofessional conduct by the event organisers.
In a statement shared on social media, Riba said his team travelled nearly 12 hours for the event and had requested just one hour for a sound check. However, they were reportedly made to wait at the venue from 10:00 am until 2:00 am the next day without a proper green room or basic facilities.
Riba alleged that members of the organising team made derogatory remarks and sidelined his performance in favour of dignitaries, saying “humein farak nahi padta woh gaaye ya nahi” and insisting that “humein sirf dignitaries chahiye.” He further claimed that one remark suggested he be sent to a “local stall to drink,” and that he could perform only after the dignitaries had left, even if the sound check had to be conducted later.

Calling the experience disheartening, the singer said the comments reflected a lack of respect for artistes and their craft. Riba announced that he would return his performance fee but would not refund travel and band-related expenses incurred for the trip. “I will not take any personal fee after the humiliation faced,” he wrote.
Furthermore, Rapper Shady Mellow also extended support to Riba, claiming he had declined to perform at the festival earlier for similar reasons. He alleged that his team’s requests for basic travel and accommodation were dismissed and that organisers made disparaging remarks about his talent and representation.
Expressing solidarity, Shady Mellow said the treatment was particularly painful coming from within one’s own community, known for its hospitality.
The controversy has sparked conversations online about the need for professionalism and respect in handling performers, especially at cultural events meant to celebrate unity and heritage.
