Zubeen Garg Death Case: Sister Palmi Borthakur Slams “Character Assassination”, Appeals for Restraint

In an emotional social media post, Zubeen Garg’s sister condemns rumours, defends Garima Garg, and reiterates faith in the SIT and the judiciary

Guwahati: Amid growing speculation and online debates following the submission of the chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg death case, the late singer’s sister, Palmi Borthakur, on Saturday night shared an emotional post on social media, strongly condemning what she described as relentless character assassination of Zubeen Garg and targeted attacks on his wife, Garima Garg.

Palmi said the criticism and rumours circulating on social media have crossed all limits, causing repeated health setbacks for Garima Garg. “I am forced to write this today because the character assassination of Zubeen Garg and the vilification of Garima Garg have reached an extreme level. This has made Garima fall ill repeatedly,” she wrote, expressing anguish over what she called the behaviour of “masked friends and fans”.

Clarifying misconceptions surrounding the chargesheet, Palmi rejected claims that Garima Garg was “satisfied” with the investigation. She stated that Garima had only appreciated the sections under which the main accused were booked, and not the chargesheet as a whole. “We have not even received the signed and sealed copy of the chargesheet yet. There is no question of satisfaction or dissatisfaction at this stage,” she wrote, adding that the family continues to repose faith in the Special Investigation Team (SIT), the Chief Minister and the judiciary.

Addressing repeated questions on why Garima Garg did not travel to Singapore to file a separate FIR, Palmi explained that investigations were already conducted both in Assam and Singapore. She questioned the purpose of initiating a parallel probe that could create conflicting conclusions, especially when Singapore Police reports had remained unchanged. “Who will guarantee justice if the findings remain the same?” she asked.

Palmi also expressed strong resentment against certain expatriate Assamese individuals who were present at the time of the incident in Singapore but allegedly failed to cooperate fully with investigators. She demanded that all those present come forward and testify truthfully before the court.

In her post, Palmi emphasised that their fight is solely for justice and not for gossip or political narratives. “Justice for Zubeen Garg will come through facts and evidence, not rumours,” she said, urging people to stop spreading unverified claims and premature declarations of innocence.

Concluding her message, she spoke about the deep personal loss suffered by the family, stating that life came to a standstill on the day Zubeen Garg passed away. She appealed to the public to honour the artist through creativity, humanity and respect, rather than controversy. “Celebrate Zubeen Garg through his values and art, not through politics,” she wrote, asserting that true fans would stand for justice with dignity and restraint.
