Two senior MLAs step down amid disciplinary actions, exposing growing unrest within Assam’s AIUDF ahead of elections

Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is reeling from internal turmoil as Hailakandi MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar and Sonai MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya formally resigned from the party, sending shockwaves ahead of Assam’s Rajya Sabha elections.
The resignations come after both MLAs were facing disciplinary action. The AIUDF had suspended Barbhuiya, who also served as the party’s vice-president, and Badarpur MLA Abdul Aziz for six years. The party cites their involvement in “anti-party activities” deemed detrimental to the organisation and its reputation.
Barbhuiya announced his resignation on social media, saying, “Today I have decided to resign from AIUDF. The decision was taken after consulting people from Sonai and various other sections of society.”
The departures coincided with the MLAs extending support to National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Pramod Boro, who filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls today. The move surprised AIUDF insiders, as the Badruddin Ajmal-led party had previously aimed to project Boro as a joint opposition candidate for Assam’s third Rajya Sabha seat.
Addressing the situation, AIUDF leader Rafiqul Islam said, “Those MLAs who are not with us, we have already sidelined them. Every party sidelines its garbage like this. Two were suspended a year ago, and two others yesterday. Such things happen in all parties, including Congress.”
The resignations of Laskar and Barbhuiya underline deepening internal rifts in AIUDF. The action raise questions about the party’s cohesion in key constituencies as Assam’s political landscape intensifies ahead of the electoral cycle.
