President’s Rule lifted as inclusive NDA government takes charge to steer state toward peace and stability

Guwahati: Manipur marked the return of an elected government with Yumnam Khemchand Singh taking oath as the Chief Minister, following the formal revocation of President’s Rule in the state.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office to Singh, a BJP MLA from the Meitei community. Nemcha Kipgen from the Kuki-Zo community and Losii Dikho of the Naga People’s Front were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers, alongside ministers Konthoujam Govindas Singh and Khuraijam Loken Singh. The composition of the cabinet reflects representation from key communities, signalling an effort to promote inclusivity and reconciliation.

The swearing-in came after the Ministry of Home Affairs issued an official notification, published in The Gazette of India on February 4, 2026, confirming that President Droupadi Murmu had revoked the Proclamation under Article 356. President’s Rule, which had been in force since February 13, 2025, was lifted with immediate effect.
The political transition follows prolonged ethnic violence that began in May 2023, which claimed more than 250 lives and displaced tens of thousands, necessitating Central intervention.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Singh and the newly formed government, extending his best wishes to the deputy chief ministers and ministers. He said the new administration reflects the people’s mandate as well as Manipur’s rich diversity, “The new government reflects not only the mandate of the people, but also the rich plurality and diversity that define Manipur.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the team, voicing optimism about their efforts. With constitutional governance restored, expectations remain high for lasting stability and progress in Manipur.
