“With Land, Comes a Home”: Assam CM Announces PMAY Support for Tea Workers

Himanta Biswa Sarma Unveils Land and Housing Guarantee for Tea Workers; Homes Assured Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Guwahati: The Assam government will begin a major land allotment drive for workers from March 13, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that beneficiaries will receive not just land but also housing to ensure meaningful rehabilitation and security.

Stressing that land without shelter offers limited value, the Chief Minister said the state’s objective is to provide both land pattas and permanent homes so that families can settle with dignity. He noted that discussions were held with Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, requesting that beneficiaries be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana immediately after receiving legal ownership of their land.

According to the Chief Minister, the Union government has agreed in principle to extend housing benefits alongside land allotment, with officials set to assess the number of eligible beneficiaries. The move is expected to particularly benefit tea garden workers, many of whom have long awaited secure land rights and proper housing.

Calling it a historic step, the Chief Minister said the initiative would ensure that tea workers receive both land and a home, marking a significant improvement in their living conditions and social security.
