Deployment of an amphibious assault ship signals potential escalation as the Strait of Hormuz faces ongoing disruption

New Delhi: The United States is moving to significantly expand its military footprint in the Middle East, with the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli en route to the Arabian Sea carrying more than 2,000 Marines.
The vessel, which has already transited the Strait of Malacca, is expected to play a central role in any large-scale operation in the region. Designed for rapid deployment, the USS Tripoli can support both aerial and ground missions simultaneously, functioning as a mobile base equipped with advanced aircraft, helicopters and combat-ready troops.
This development comes amid rising hostilities involving Iran, which has launched missiles and drones following US and Israeli strikes. The ongoing confrontation has disrupted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy corridor that handles nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply.
Defence experts view the deployment as a clear signal of operational intent rather than a symbolic show of strength. Washington appears focused on securing maritime routes in the Arabian Sea and ensuring uninterrupted passage through Hormuz, even if it requires an escalation in military action against Iranian positions.
With tensions already at a peak, the arrival of the USS Tripoli is likely to further heighten the risk of a broader conflict across the region.
