TMC Fields First List in Assam: Congress Makes Key Reshuffle

TMC fields 17 candidates across key seats while Congress replaces Bhaskar Baruah in Titabor and takes tally to 94 seats

Guwahati: The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamta Banarjee, on March 21 announced is first list of 17 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, marking its formal entry into the state’s electoral contest.

Among those fielded are Jiten Nag from Digboi, Tapas Das from Udharbond, Mominur Islam from Bilasipara, Rajan Chouhan from Gorewar and Dulu Ahmed from Chamaria. The party has also nominated Udangsri Narzary from Baokhungri, Arif Akhtar Ahmed from Jaleswar, Fazlut Rahman Laskar from Katigorah and Shahjahan Laskar from Sonai, signalling its intent to build a presence across diverse constituencies.

Meanwhile, in a notable reshuffle, the Congress has dropped sitting MLA Bhaskar Baruah from Titabor and replaced him with Pran Kurmi. The constituency holds political significance, having long been associated with former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is contesting from Jorhat.

The party has fielded Bidisha Neog from Jalukbari against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Other candidates in the latest list include former NSUI state president Joy Prakash Das from Nowboicha, Youth Congress leader Rohit Pariga from Tangla, Gyandip Mohan from Mahmora, Jayanta Borah from Biswanath and Rahul Roy from Hailakandi.

Earlier, the Congress had released three lists, including 42 candidates in the first, 23 in the second and 22 in the third, as it leads a six-party alliance comprising Raijor Dal, CPI(M), Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI (ML) Liberation and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference. Key names announced earlier include Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia from Nazira and former PCC president Ripun Bora from Barchalla.

With both TMC and Congress stepping up their candidate announcements, the electoral contest in Assam is witnessing a sharper alignment of forces and an increasingly competitive field across constituencies.
