Tehran Hit as US–Israel Launch Coordinated Strikes on Iran

Explosions in Tehran, Trump announces combat operations as retaliation fears grow across the region

Tehran: The United States and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes on Iran on February 28. It sharply escalates tensions across West Asia and pushing the region toward open conflict. Fighter jets and missiles targeted strategic and military installations, including sites near Tehran that officials linked to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Explosions were first reported near offices associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in central Tehran. Thick smoke rose over the capital as sirens sounded and security alerts spread. Roads around the compound were sealed, and it remained unclear whether Khamenei was present. Communications were restricted and several districts reported further blasts.

In a video message, US President Donald Trump said Washington had begun “major combat operations in Iran.” He accused Tehran of advancing nuclear and missile capabilities and said the strikes aimed to destroy key facilities and weapons stockpiles. He warned Iran’s leadership against further escalation and urged citizens to seek political change.

Israeli authorities described the offensive as pre-emptive and necessary for national security. Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation was intended to remove threats. Israel closed its airspace, activated emergency protocols and shifted hospitals to protected zones as sirens warned of retaliation.

Within hours, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israeli territory, triggering air raid alerts and forcing residents into shelters. Flights were suspended and schools shut. Reports also suggested threats to US bases and allied facilities in the Gulf.

The crisis stems from decades of mistrust over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence, including ties with Hezbollah and Hamas. Recent diplomacy had stalled, raising fears of direct confrontation. Oil prices jumped, neighbouring states closed airspace and the United Nations urged restraint. With both sides on high alert, the conflict risks widening into a broader regional war.
