Congress MP says press conference meant to distract from land, governance and accountability issues

Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a strong counterattack against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, dismissing the allegations about his alleged Pakistan links through his wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, as “mindless and bogus.”
Reacting to the Chief Minister’s detailed press conference, Gogoi described it as the “most flop press conference of the century” and “worse than a C-grade cinema,” accusing Sarma of focusing on sensational claims instead of addressing real governance concerns in Assam.
“This Super Flop conference only shows the Chief Minister’s focus on baseless allegations instead of the real issues of the people of Assam,” Gogoi said.
He argued that the controversy was being politically engineered to divert attention from what he called failures of the ruling establishment. According to him, the timing of the allegations coincides with the Congress party’s Xomoy Parivartan Yatra, which he said has exposed issues such as unemployment, public distress, and alleged land irregularities linked to the Chief Minister’s family.
Gogoi specifically questioned the reported acquisition of nearly 12,000 bighas, or 4,000 acres of land, by the CM and his relatives, demanding public clarification. “He should explain how such vast prime land was acquired. When we come to power, we will return that land to the poor and landless,” he asserted.
While reaffirming his faith in constitutional institutions, Gogoi said he has “nothing to hide” and would cooperate with any lawful investigation. He, however, warned that investigative agencies must not be misused for political battles.
“Truth will prevail. Governance should focus on development and people’s welfare, not distraction politics,” he added.
The exchange marks an escalation in the political confrontation between the BJP-led state government and the Congress ahead of key public campaigns in Assam.
