Sunrisers Hyderabad Appoint Ishan Kishan as Stand‑in Captain with Cummins Unavailable

Wicketkeeper-batter named interim skipper after Pat Cummins’ absence in IPL 2026, with Abhishek Sharma as vice-captain ahead of the opening fixtures

Hyderabad: Ishan Kishan has been named the stand‑in captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, as regular captain Pat Cummins is set to miss the first few matches due to injury.

The franchise confirmed on Wednesday that Kishan will lead the side while Cummins continues his recovery from a lumbar injury that also ruled him out of Australia’s recent T20 World Cup campaign.  Former India opener and current SRH player Abhishek Sharma has been appointed as vice‑captain to support Kishan in his leadership role.

Kishan’s elevation comes just weeks before SRH opens its IPL campaign, and follows strong performances domestically and in international T20 competition. While the team management has not specified how many games Cummins will miss, official statements indicate that Kishan will maintain leadership duties until the Australian pacer is fully fit.

The decision aims to ensure continuity and on‑field direction as SRH prepares for its season opener, with the management emphasising stability despite key personnel changes.

SRH last season finished sixth in the league stage, and the franchise will be hoping that Kishan’s leadership and Sharma’s deputy role provide early momentum in IPL 2026.
