SS Rajamouli Locks 2027 Release for Mahesh Babu–Starrer ‘Varanasi’

Ramayana-inspired epic promises IMAX-scale action, time travel, and a global cinematic spectacle

Guwahati: The ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli has officially set 2027 as the release year for his next ambitious project, titled ‘Varanasi’ starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role. The makers are reportedly eyeing a Ram Navami release in April 2027, aligning the film’s robust mythological background.

The excitement mounted as a 26-second clip from the ‘Ramayanam episode’ was released by the team of director Rajamouli. The teaser had some breathtaking action visuals, with high-speed slow motion shots of embers swirling around, muscles rippling, and large-scale choreography, which only reinforced the director’s credentials for cinematic grandeur.

Moreover, renowned Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu plays the role of Rudhra, a loyal devotee of Lord Shiva, on a time-bending, globe-spanning quest influenced by the Ramayana. The character is reported to take thematic cues from Lord Rama, with a massive 60-day continuous shoot allotted to this mythological segment.

The movie also features Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in key roles, while Oscar-winning MM Keeravani is back as the music composer. Conceived as ‘filmed for IMAX initiative, ‘Varanasi’ is shot in the 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio, which is a first in Indian cinema.

With a staggering budget believed to be over Rs. 1,300 crore, the movie is being filmed on massive sets in Hyderabad, with hundreds of junior artists in action. Several international VFX studios are working on the movie simultaneously to ensure that it meets the ambitious deadline of 2027.

After the worldwide success of ‘Baahubali’ and ‘RRR’, ‘Varanasi’ is shaping up to be Rajamouli’s most technologically advanced and globally scaled project to date, promising an epic mix of mythology, action, and time travel.
