District Election Office of Sonitpur assures due process amid concerns over Form-7 applications

Sonitpur: The Sonitpur district administration has issued a public advisory in connection with the ongoing process of revision of electoral rolls in respect of five legislative assembly constituencies – Dhekiajuli, Barchalla, Tezpur, Rangapara, and Naduar.
In the advisory, the District Election Office clarified that every elector has a responsibility to furnish accurate and correct information while filling out application forms in Forms 6, 7, and 8, as well as while verifying information through Booth Level Officers (BLOs). It also cautioned that furnishing false information, as well as intentionally maintaining false names in the electoral rolls, is a penal offence as per the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The administration also noted concerns have been raised by members of the public regarding a rise in Form-7 applications during the course of the revision of rolls. To ease these apprehensions, it is mentioned that there is a mandatory procedure for dealing with every application filed with Form-7. This involves verification of each ‘Form-7’ at the ground level through B.L.Os, followed by the issue of notice to affected voters and supplying them with an opportunity to plead their case before E.R.O.
The advisory stressed that no deletion can take place without following due legal norms, and genuine voters need not feel anxious. The revision exercise, it stated, is aimed at ensuring a clean, accurate and inclusive electoral roll.
Electors aggrieved in respect of inclusion, exclusion, or correction of name in the rolls have been advised to seek that necessary steps be taken under the provisions of the Rules governing Regulation of Registration of Electors 1960. For any kind of assistance or redressal of grievances, concerned BLOs, ERO offices, or helpline 1950 are available.
The district administration appealed to the citizens to provide full cooperation in maintaining the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.
