Six-Year Wait Ends in Abhi–Neel Case

Nagaon court begins final arguments in Karbi Anglong lynching that shook Assam

Nagaon: The long-awaited pursuit of justice in one of Assam’s most disturbing incidents of mob violence has entered its decisive phase, as the final hearing of the Abhi–Neel lynching case began today at the District and Sessions Court in Nagaon. The proceedings bring to a close nearly six years of legal scrutiny, investigation, and trial in a case that deeply shook public conscience across the state.

The concluding hearings will be conducted over three days, February 5, 6, and 7, during which both the prosecution and defence will present their final arguments. Following the completion of submissions, the court is expected to pronounce its verdict.

The case pertains to the brutal killing of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpala Das on June 8, 2018, at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district. The two young men were lynched by a mob after false rumours branded them as child abductors. The incident, widely condemned as a consequence of misinformation and mob hysteria, triggered statewide outrage and renewed debate over vigilantism and public safety.

For the victims’ families, the final stage of the trial represents a critical step toward accountability and closure. Legal observers note that the judgment could set an important precedent in addressing mob lynching cases and reinforcing the rule of law.

As the hearings progress, Assam watches closely, hoping the verdict will deliver justice and reaffirm faith in the judicial system.
