Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has indicated that the proposed alliance between the Congress and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is nearing completion, with seat-sharing talks reportedly covering multiple constituencies across the state.
The Chief Minister noted that seats like Sadiya, Binakandi, Khumtai, and Brahmapur are expected to go to AJP under the arrangement. The party identified as APHCL may receive two seats in Karbi Anglong, while discussions are ongoing to allocate two seats to CPI and one to CPI (ML).
However, he clarified that there is no agreement yet with the Raijor Dal. “If they manage to bring Raijor Dal on board, we will certainly acknowledge it,” he said.
Taking a swipe at Congress, the Chief Minister claimed he is well-informed about internal party matters, citing recent organisational changes that “created quite a stir”. He further asserted that information flowed from him, not from former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah.
The CM also downplayed the possibility of the opposition alliance gaining strength through inducting more MLAs, stating that the BJP’s ticket distribution is almost finalised for about 80 seats, leaving limited room for adjustments.
With Assembly elections around the corner, these remarks highlight the growing political manoeuvring in Assam, as parties fine-tune alliances and finalise candidates to strengthen their position across key constituencies
