Reservation, Women’s Empowerment and Highways: Assam Cabinet Unveils Growth-Packed Decisions

Focus on inclusive growth, renewable energy expansion and large-scale connectivity projects to ensure benefits reach the last mile

Guwahati: : In a significant push towards inclusive development and economic expansion, the Assam Cabinet on Wednesday approved a series of welfare, infrastructure and employment-oriented measures aimed at strengthening both social security and long-term growth prospects of the state.

Among the key decisions, the Cabinet resolved to consider a 3% reservation for Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities in Class I and Class II government posts, a move expected to enhance representation and create better opportunities for historically marginalised groups.

To promote women-led entrepreneurship, seed capital support will be extended to over 1.03 lakh women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). The initiative is expected to strengthen self-employment and rural livelihoods across Assam.

The Cabinet also approved the development of the Borbheti Campus in Jorhat to improve educational and institutional infrastructure. At the same time, focused investments in the renewable energy sector aim to transform Assam into a power-surplus state, ensuring energy security and supporting industrial growth.

Large-scale infrastructure projects backed by the Centre are further accelerating development. The Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, Gohpur Tunnel, and the Guwahati Ring Road are expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and open up new economic opportunities across regions.

With customised incentives, new industries are steadily emerging across sectors, boosting employment and investment. Meanwhile, the continued expansion of the Orunodoi Scheme, enhanced pension support, strengthened health insurance coverage, and targeted programmes for women, children and rural communities underline the government’s commitment to reinforcing the social safety net.

Together, these measures reflect Assam’s broader development vision, combining economic growth with welfare to ensure that the benefits of progress reach the last person standing.
