Ramadan Begins: A Month of Fasting, Faith and Compassion Worldwide

From dawn-to-dusk fasting and nightly prayers to charity and community feasts, the holy month calls for spiritual renewal and self-discipline

Guwahati: As the crescent moon was sighted on Wednesday evening, Muslims across India and many parts of the world welcomed the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. With the first fast observed today, homes, mosques and marketplaces have taken on a distinct rhythm, one shaped by prayer, restraint, reflection and togetherness.

Ramadan is observed to commemorate the revelation of the Holy Quraan to Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago. Fasting during this month is one of the core religious duties for Muslims and is seen not merely as abstaining from food and drink, but as a path toward spiritual cleansing, patience and gratitude.

Each fasting day begins before sunrise with suhoor, a light pre-dawn meal shared with family. After sunset, the fast is broken with iftar, traditionally starting with dates and water, followed by wholesome meals. These gatherings often turn into warm social moments, with neighbours and relatives inviting one another to break the fast together.

Charity also forms the heart of Ramadan. Donations, food distribution and acts of kindness increase significantly. Many people pay zakat (mandatory charity) and provide meals to the underprivileged, reinforcing the message that faith must be accompanied by compassion.

In Guwahati, several mosques organised community iftars, where people from different backgrounds gathered to share meals. Across the world, pilgrims have already begun arriving in Mecca, considered Islam’s holiest city, for prayers during the sacred month.

More than a ritual of fasting, Ramadan is often described as a month of transformation. It strengthens bonds within families, deepens faith and reminds believers to care for those less fortunate. The month will conclude with the joyous festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of fasting and celebrating a renewed sense of community and devotion.
