Party releases first list a day after Congress names 42 nominees for 2026 Assam polls

Guwahati: The Raijor Dal on March 4 unveiled its first list of 11 candidates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. It is signalling the party’s electoral push even as seat-sharing discussions with the Indian National Congress remain unresolved.
The list, released from the party’s Mathgharia head office in Guwahati, was formally signed by party president Akhil Gogoi. Notably, the announcement did not include Sivasagar, the constituency currently represented by Gogoi. The action indicates speculation over ongoing negotiations and the party’s strategy for the high-profile seat.
According to the official notification issued by the party’s election committee, According to the party’s official notification, the approved candidates are: East Goalpara (14) – Abdur Rashid Mandal; Jalukbari (37) – Romen Chandra Borthakur; Manas (41) – Anjan Talukdar; Dalgaon (51) – Ajijur Rahman; Dhing (55) – Mehboob Mukhtar; Tezpur (67) – Alok Nath; Sisiborgaon (79) – Dulal Chandra Barua; Margherita (83) – Rahul Chetry; Digboi (84) – Lakhyajyoti Gogoi; Mariani (101) – Dr Gyanashree Bora; and Bokakhat (105) – Ratan Dao.
Several of these constituencies, including East Goalpara, Dhing, Margherita and Mariani, are central to opposition seat-sharing discussions. Political observers say the move indicates that Raijor Dal is prepared to proceed independently if a final understanding with Congress does not materialise.
The development comes just a day after the Congress released its first list of 42 candidates, setting the tone for an intense electoral contest. Among the prominent nominees, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi has been fielded from Jorhat. Former state party chief Ripun Bora will contest from Barchalla, while Debabrata Saikia has been named from Nazira.
With both parties declaring candidates independently, uncertainty over opposition unity continues to shape the political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
