Student and youth organisations allege disenfranchisement of indigenous voters, demand corrective action within seven days

Sivasagar: Sivasagar witnessed a tense protest on Thursday as several student and youth organisations staged a demonstration in front of the local election office, opposing the ongoing Special Revision of Electoral Rolls. The protesters alleged that the process threatens the voting rights of indigenous communities and could alter the state’s electoral balance.
The protest was jointly organised by the Assam Students and Youth Association, the All Assam Scheduled Caste Students’ Union, the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union, and the Greater Assamese Youth Forum. The groups accused authorities of using the special revision exercise to delete the names of indigenous Muslim voters while simultaneously allowing the inclusion of non-Assamese voters in the electoral rolls.
Addressing the gathering, leaders of the organisations described the revision process as discriminatory and politically motivated. They alleged that the Election Commission was being used as a ‘political tool’ by the BJP-led government, and warned that such actions could undermine democratic principles and public trust in the electoral system

The protesters demanded an immediate halt to what they termed arbitrary deletions from the voter list and called for transparency and fairness in the revision process. They also announced a seven-day deadline for authorities to reinstate the names of voters who, according to them, were wrongfully removed from the rolls.
Raising slogans and holding placards, the demonstrators stressed that voting rights form the foundation of democracy and should not be compromised under any administrative exercise. They warned that failure to address their demands within the stipulated time would lead to intensified protests across the region. The demonstration reflects growing concerns among civil society groups in Assam over electoral revisions and their potential impact on indigenous communities, ahead of crucial political developments in the state.
