Nagaon MP switches sides after quitting Congress, CM hints at more defections ahead
New Delhi: In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi on Wednesday officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a day after stepping down from the Congress, ending his long-standing association with the party.
The induction took place in Delhi at the residence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described Bordoloi’s entry as a significant boost for the party. Emphasising the broader political message, Sarma said the move reflects a shared commitment towards Assam’s development under the leadership at the Centre.
According to the Chief Minister, Bordoloi’s entry into the BJP was cleared by senior party leadership, including Nitin Nabin. He also underscored that Bordoloi’s decision carried weight, given that he still had a substantial tenure left as a Member of Parliament.
The Chief Minister further indicated that this may not be an isolated development, suggesting that more leaders from the Congress could shift allegiance in the near future. Referring to figures such as Ripun Bora and Debabrata Saikia, he hinted at a continuing trend of political realignment in the state, which he said has been underway for several years.
He also sought to frame Bordoloi’s move as one driven by principle rather than political gain, stating that the former Congress leader had made a personal sacrifice in choosing to switch sides at this stage.
The development is being viewed as a strategic gain for the BJP and a setback for the Congress in Assam, particularly as the state heads into a crucial electoral contest, where party strength and leadership will play a decisive role.
