Nagaon MP quits after nearly three decades of service, likely to contest from Dispur constituency; the move comes soon after the BJP’s invitation from CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: In a significant political development, just days ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the Indian National Congress (INC). Bordoloi’s resignation marks the end of an association of nearly three decades.
The sitting MP from Nagaon submitted his resignation on March 17, in a letter addressed to the party president Mallikarjun Kharge. In the letter, he wrote, “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress”
The resignation marks a major setback for the Congress in Assam at a Crucial political juncture. Bordoloi, a two-time MP, a four-time MLA and former minister in the Congress government led by former CM Tarun Gogoi. He has been a prominent face pf the party in the state.
Meanwhile, his exit comes shortly after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly invited him to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The CM offers him a potential opportunity to contest the upcoming Assembly elections.
Sources indicated that Bordoloi is likely to be fielded by the BJP from the prestigious Dispur constituency. However, an official confirmation is awaited.
Notably, his resignation follows the recent departure of the former state Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah, pointing to the growing churn within the party ranks in Assam.
