Certification, skill training, modern toolkits and easy credit support under the PM Vishwakarma scheme are helping strengthen livelihoods and modernise Assam’s traditional artisan economy

Guwahati: Assam’s traditional artisans are receiving a major push under the PM Vishwakarma scheme, with thousands gaining access to formal training, modern equipment and institutional credit aimed at strengthening livelihoods and preserving age-old crafts.
According to official figures, 1.18 lakh artisans have been certified, while 92,851 have undergone skill training, enabling them to upgrade their expertise and adopt improved production techniques. To enhance productivity, 37,402 toolkits have been distributed across trades, equipping beneficiaries with modern tools to scale up their work.
Financial assistance has also seen a significant boost, with 13,655 loans disbursed worth Rs 125.34 crore, ensuring artisans receive much-needed credit support to expand businesses and improve incomes.
Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the scheme is empowering local craftsmen through robust skilling, better tools and easier access to finance. He noted that strengthening the artisan community is central to building a self-reliant and resilient rural economy.
Launched by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM Vishwakarma programme focuses on supporting traditional workers, helping them integrate with modern markets while sustaining their heritage skills.
