PM Narendra Modi Hails Assam’s Growth, Calls Northeast ‘Ashtalakshmi’

Prime Minister asserts that Assam’s tax share has increased fivefold under the BJP-led government and calls the region the NDA’s “Ashtalakshmi”

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a robust address to a large gathering in Assam on February 14, emphasising accelerated development in the state and the entire Northeast while sharply criticising the performance of the Indian National Congress during its long tenure in power.

The Prime Minister described the Northeast as the NDA’s Ashtalakshmi’ symbolising prosperity and priority and asserted that his government is committed to making the region economically self-reliant after years of alleged neglect by previous administrations.

In his address, the Prime Minister pointed to the recent Union Budget and highlighted that Assam’s share of central taxes this year is expected to be around Rs 50,000 crore, a nearly fivefold increase compared with roughly Rs 10,000 crore during the Congress era. He said that over the past 11 years, Assam has received more than Rs 5.5 lakh crore in central funding for development projects.

Targeting the opposition, the Prime Minister alleged that the Congress not only ignored the Northeast but also failed to uphold national interests, claiming that it lacked the vision to prioritise security and economic growth. He contrasted this with the current government’s focus on connectivity, tourism and employment.

Subsequently, the PM also paid tribute to security personnel on the anniversary of the Pulwama attack, recalling India’s strong response to terrorism and highlighting continued efforts to safeguard national security.

The rally that was held ahead of elections in the state saw enthusiastic support from party workers and attendees, with the Prime Minister urging continued organisational strength and unity as the BJP prepares for the upcoming polls.
