Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted culture, sports, nature, and development as northeastern states mark 53 years of statehood; nationwide wishes pour in

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to the states of Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura as they celebrated 54 years of achieving full statehood based on the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act of 1971. The Act significantly changed Northeast India, with the creation of new states, redefining the boundaries of the state of Assam, and enhancing representation, governance, and national integration.
Greeting Meghalaya, PM Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “The people of Meghalaya have made strong contributions to the development of our nation. The state’s cultural vibrancy and scenic beauty are widely admired.” He further expressed hope that the state would continue to progress, adding, “May Meghalaya keep scaling new heights of development in the future.”
Similarly, the Prime Minister, in a message on Manipur, said, “People from Manipur are enriching the progress of India,” while enumerating the state’s strengths. He said, “This state’s passion towards sports, culture and nature is noteworthy,” and wished that it would “continue to move forward on the path of development in the times to come.”
Extending his heartfelt wishes for Tripura, PM Modi termed the journey of the State as one of poise and transformation. “Tripura’s journey is marked by a remarkable blend of tradition and modernity,” he said and mentioned that the State has seen “pioneering transformations in diverse fields.” He further added, “Its people are adding momentum to India’s growth trajectory,” and prayed that “Tripura prospers significantly in the coming times.”
In his messages, the Prime Minister mentioned the state’s role in the country’s development, appreciating its “rich cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and the contributions that the state has been making towards the development of the country.” The three states gained full statehood status on January 21, 1972.
President Droupadi Murmu also extended her greetings, saying the states carry a rich heritage and their eternal tale of facing adversities with equanimity. Leaders of the opposition, such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge, added to the chorus of felicitations over the Northeast’s vital role in India’s diversity and unity while hoping the region sees lasting peace, progress, and inclusive development.
The event was observed with regional festivities and even with greetings and messages for peace, development, and prosperity in the Northeast region by political party leaders across different political affiliations.
