Operation Himrahat: Indian Army Evacuates 46 Tourists Stranded in Sikkim

Indian Army swiftly evacuates 46 stranded tourists and facilitates safe movement of over 150 vehicles amid heavy snowfall in East Sikkim

Gangtok: The Indian Army conducted a swift rescue operation under ‘Operation Himrahat’ in East Sikkim, safely evacuating 46 tourists stranded due to heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, officials said on Monday.

According to defence sources, sudden intense snowfall on February 22 disrupted travel across vulnerable stretches, leaving multiple vehicles stranded and civilians exposed to extreme weather. Army troops stationed in the region launched a coordinated relief and rescue effort, shifting the tourists to the nearest Army camp for medical checks, warm shelter, hot meals, and essential care.

In addition to evacuations, the Army ensured safe movement for over 150 tourist vehicles, regulated traffic in challenging terrain, and prevented further exposure to harsh conditions.

Defence officials said the operation restored mobility, prevented escalation, and highlighted the Army’s ongoing commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR), particularly in remote high-altitude areas prone to natural disruptions.
