Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi responds to Priyanka Gandhi, citing a deeper issue behind the resignation; hints at a possible BJP entry

Guwahati: Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has firmly rejected claims that his resignation from the party was triggered by dissatisfaction over ticket allocations. He asserts that instead, his decision was guided by “dignity and self-respect.”
Responding to the remarks by Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Bordoloi clarifies that the electoral consideration was never central to his decision. “For me, a party ticket was never a matter of life and death. What truly mattered to me was my dignity and self-respect. I have always maintained a benchmark when it comes to honour, and I cannot compromise on that,” he said.
The two-time parliamentarian pointed to a range of factors that contributed to his growing disillusionment within the party. He alleged that the internal environment had become increasingly “suffocating”, citing the role of certain leaders, including Imran Masood, whose actions, he claimed, fostered divisive sentiments during visits to Assam. According to Bordoloi, such developments deepened his sense of alienation within the organisation.
Emphasising that his resignation was a conscious choice rather than a compelled move, Bordoloi noted that he still had significant time remaining in his current Lok Sabha term. “I could have continued, endured the humiliation, and retained my position. But I chose otherwise. I believe it is more important to stand by my principles and continue working with integrity,” he stated.
Reflecting on his long association with the Congress, Bordoloi said he had joined the party at the age of 16 through the NSUI during a turbulent period marked by insurgency in Assam. Despite the challenges faced by party workers at the time, he said, they remained committed and contributed to the state’s development.
He added that the cumulative effect of recent developments, particularly the treatment he received from the leadership, ultimately led to his decision to part ways. “Congress is in my DNA, but I must now choose a path that allows me to continue my work with dignity,” he said.
On being asked about his political future and whether he would consider joining the BJP, Bordoloi indicated that the possibility remains open. “Well, I suppose so, because I have been invited,” he remarked, without elaborating further.
