NHRC issues notice to Delhi Police after a Manipur woman was assaulted in Malviya Nagar following her objection to racial and lewd abuse

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that a woman from Manipur was physically assaulted in the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi after she objected to lewd and racial remarks by a group of boys.
The incident reportedly occurred on 8 March 2026 while the victim, along with her friends, was taking a walk in a park near the Saket Court Complex. A group of men allegedly made inappropriate remarks, and when the woman objected, the situation escalated, leading to her reported assault.
Delhi Police have already registered a case under relevant legal provisions and deployed multiple teams to identify and apprehend the accused. One juvenile has been detained, and raids continued for the remaining perpetrators. Authorities confirmed they are providing the victim with all necessary assistance and assured strict legal action against those responsible.
Observing that the reported assault, if true, constitutes a serious violation of human rights, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to cover the victim’s health status and the progress of the investigation into the matter.
The Commission’s prompt action underscores its commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring that complaints of harassment and racial abuse are addressed swiftly.
