Shillong event connects local entrepreneurs with buyers from 18 countries, strengthens ease of doing business and export readiness

Shillong: Meghalaya marked a major step toward expanding its global trade footprint on February 3 by hosting the Northeast’s first-ever Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet in Shillong. The initiative brings together international buyers and local enterprises on a single platform to boost exports and promote homegrown industries.
The two-day meet, inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, saw participation from buyers representing 18 countries and more than 100 MSMEs across sectors, including agri and food processing, handlooms, handicrafts, textiles, bamboo and wood products, spices, and herbal and wellness goods.

Highlighting the state’s reform-driven growth strategy, Sangma said the government has scrapped over 400 regulations in recent years, including nearly 70 in the labour sector, to create a more business-friendly ecosystem. He also launched the ‘MeghaRise’ logo and a dedicated MSME portal aimed at improving branding, visibility, and digital access for entrepreneurs.
Calling the initiative more than just a trade event, Sangma said it focuses on “building trust and forging long-term partnerships” that benefit farmers, entrepreneurs, buyers, and the state alike. He stressed that the government has strengthened logistics, skilling, and support systems to ensure local enterprises are globally competitive.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar described the meet as a buyer-oriented platform designed for structured business-to-business engagement rather than conventional exhibitions, enabling direct negotiations and export linkages.
Organised by the Department of Commerce and Industries in association with the Federation of Indian Export Organisations under the Union MSME Ministry’s Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance scheme, the event also included export-import orientation and capacity-building programmes.
