Manipuri Film ‘Boong’ Wins Big at BAFTA: Puts Northeast on World Stage

Lakshmipriya Devi’s children’s drama bags top honour in London, director calls for peace in Manipur during emotional speech

Guwahati: In a landmark moment for Indian regional cinema, Manipuri-language film Boong created history by winning the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the 79th edition of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards 2026 held in London.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film triumphed over major international contenders, drawing global attention to stories emerging from India’s Northeast. Produced by Excel Entertainment, Boong tells the emotional coming-of-age journey of a young boy in Manipur, navigating life amid challenging social realities.

The victory marked a significant breakthrough for Manipuri and regional storytelling on the world stage, underscoring the growing diversity of Indian cinema in global spaces.

During her acceptance speech, Devi struck an emotional chord by using the international platform to speak about the situation back home. Describing Manipur as “ignored and very unrepresented,” she prayed for lasting peace and expressed hope that children in the state would regain their innocence, joy and the freedom to dream despite prolonged unrest.

Her heartfelt appeal resonated strongly with the audience, turning the win into more than a cinematic achievement. The moment became a powerful call for awareness, compassion and recognition for the voices of the region, as Boong carried both a trophy and a message to the world.
