Police seize phones and SIM cards at Sajiwa Central Jail; suspect financial transactions through warder’s UPI account as probe widens.

imphal: Manipur Police arrested a warder of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, for allegedly facilitating the illegal use of mobile phones by inmates, including those booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The accused, identified as Sahid Shah (35) from Kairang Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district, is alleged to have allowed prisoners to make and receive phone calls from inside the jail premises in violation of prison regulations.
During a search operation, police recovered multiple mobile phones and SIM cards from within the facility, raising serious concerns over security lapses in the high-risk prison.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that financial transactions were allegedly conducted from inside the jail through the warder’s UPI account. Officials suspect inmates may have used his account to transfer or receive money, pointing to the possibility of a larger network operating within the prison.
A case has been registered at Heingang Police Station, and further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the illegal activity and identify others who may be involved.
