29-year-old arrested from Naharlagun after alleged WhatsApp threat to Himanta Biswa Sarma; probe reveals financial motive

Itanagar: A threat message sent to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man from Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh, exposing how digital platforms are increasingly being misused in moments of personal crisis.
The accused, Krishna Dornal, was tracked down following coordinated efforts between Assam Police and Arunachal Pradesh Police after the message surfaced. Investigators said the threat was sent via WhatsApp after he managed to access the Chief Minister’s contact details online.
Preliminary findings suggest the incident may have stemmed from financial distress rather than any organised intent. During questioning, Dornal reportedly admitted to misusing funds at the wine shop where he worked. As pressure mounted from his employer, he first attempted to reach out to the Chief Minister seeking help.
When no response came, frustration allegedly escalated into a threat message, turning a personal issue into a criminal offence. Police officials said the accused is now in Assam Police custody and further investigation is underway.
The case underlines how impulsive actions in the digital space can quickly draw legal consequences, even when triggered by individual hardship, while also highlighting swift inter-state policing in handling such threats.
