Major Drug Busts in Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys

Chirang Police seize 30,000 YABA tablets worth Rs. 4.5 crore in Bijni, while Cachar Police recovered heroin valued at Rs. 4.7 crore, reinforcing Assam’s intensified crackdown on narcotics trafficking across regions

Guwahati: In a coordinated push against narcotics trafficking, police forces in Assam achieved significant breakthroughs in both the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, uncovering major drug consignments and arresting suspects in separate operations.

In Chirang district, a special police team intercepted a Toyota Etios in Bijni during a targeted operation. Upon searching the vehicle, officials recovered 30,000 YABA tablets, commonly referred to as methamphetamine-based party drugs, with an estimated black-market value of Rs. 4.5 crore. Two individuals were apprehended in connection with the seizure. Authorities described the operation as a major step toward dismantling a larger trafficking network in the region.

Meanwhile, in the Barak Valley, Cachar Police carried out another successful raid, leading to the recovery of 85 cases of heroin weighing approximately 947 grams. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth around Rs. 4.7 crore. One person was arrested during the operation, and further investigations are underway to trace the supply chain and identify other links.

Despite the geographical distance between the two valleys, the operations reflect a unified and firm resolve by Assam Police to curb the growing menace of drug smuggling. Officials stated that intensified surveillance, intelligence-based action, and inter-district coordination have strengthened enforcement efforts.

The back-to-back seizures highlight the state’s continued commitment to protecting communities and disrupting illegal drug networks, sending a strong message that narcotics trafficking will face strict and sustained action across Assam.
