Khowang Poll Clash: Lurinjyoti Gogoi Dismisses BJP Allegations, Calls Claims ‘Politically Motivated’

Tensions flare in Dibrugarh constituency as rival parties trade blame over violence; police step in to stabilise the situation

Guwahati: Tensions escalated in Assam’s Khowang constituency on polling day after clashes between supporters of rival political parties disrupted the voting atmosphere in parts of Dibrugarh district.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi strongly refuted allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party, describing them as “baseless” and driven by political frustration. He maintained that the unrest was not initiated by his party, but stemmed from internal disputes within the BJP.

According to Gogoi, an altercation involving individuals linked to the ruling party had triggered the initial incident, which later spiralled into broader tensions. He further alleged that some of his party’s local functionaries were targeted in subsequent attacks, raising concerns about the safety of opposition workers during the polling process.

On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders claimed their workers were assaulted near a private residence in the constituency, with several individuals sustaining injuries. Among those reportedly hurt was Prahlad Pandey, who had travelled to assist during the elections. The party also alleged damage to property and accused rival supporters of instigating violence.

The situation intensified when protestors gathered on a key stretch of the national highway, temporarily blocking traffic and demanding immediate police action against those responsible.

Local MLA Chakradhar Gogoi claimed that such incidents were not isolated, alleging repeated attacks on party workers and offices in the run-up to polling. He indicated that formal complaints would be filed and warned of further agitation if swift action was not taken.

Meanwhile, Gogoi also raised suspicions about the presence of unidentified individuals in the area, suggesting the possibility of attempts to influence the electoral process.

Police personnel were deployed promptly to contain the situation and ensure that voting continued without major disruption. While order was largely restored, authorities confirmed that the situation remained sensitive, with investigations underway into the incidents reported from the constituency.
