Indian Army Conducts Flag March in Kokrajhar Amidst Heavy Security

Heightened security was deployed in the flag march as authorities worked to stabilise the district following the violent clashes

Kokrajhar: Assam’s Kokrajhar district saw enhanced security measures on January 21, with the Indian Army conducting a flag march. These activities were undertaken to reassure residents and maintain peace after days of unrest.

The flag march was implemented in the vulnerable zones of Kokrajhar, including from Karigaon, Awdang Bazar, to Mashing Road, to reassure the residents and signify the preparedness of the administration.

Moreover, three relief camps have been set up in the district at Awdang Bazar, Karigaon Bazar and Karigaon Primary School for the affected families and can house around 1,200 people.

The move came against the background of violent protests that were occasioned by the gruesome killing of a youth, identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, on January 19, resulting in violent protests, arson, road blockade, and rioting along the Karigaon stretch. The unrest escalated when another youth, Sunil Murmu, died in related clashes, while a few others were severely injured. At least 29 people are under detention for involvement in the violence.

Moreover, in an effort to curb further escalation, the Kokrajhar administration imposed Section 144, forbidding the gathering of more than four people. The usage of weapons, black-tinted vehicle glasses, and pillion riding on two-wheeled vehicles has also been restricted. The mobile internet services remained suspended in the district, as well as in the neighbouring area of Chirang.

Additionally, there is heightened security, including the Rapid Action Force, patrolling the area. Even though life is getting back to normal, curfew-like restrictions are being enforced to ensure that there is no renewed violence. The police and authorities have been urging the public to remain calm amid efforts to restore complete normalcy.
