Himanta Biswa Sarma Seeks Sixth Term from Jalukbari: Leads Grand Roadshow

Five-time MLA seeks sixth term as thousands join procession ahead of nomination filing in Kamrup (Metro)

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 20 filed his nomination as a BJP candidate from the Jalukbari Assembly constituency after leading a massive roadshow through Guwahati.

The procession began at Khanapara Veterinary Field and moved towards the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Election office in Hengrabari, where he submitted his papers around 12:30 pm. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 supporters lined the route, raising slogans and accompanying the convoy.

The Chief Minister was joined by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, son Nandil Biswa Sarma, and Guwahati MP Bijulee Kalita Medhi during the nomination process.A notable highlight of the rally was the display of large “Superman-style” cutouts of the Chief Minister, which drew significant public attention and added a visual spectacle to the event.

A five-time MLA from Jalukbari, Sarma has represented the constituency since 2001 and is now seeking a sixth consecutive term. He began his political career with the Indian National Congress before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2016 elections, where he emerged as a central figure in the party’s rise in Assam.

The upcoming polls, scheduled for April 9, are expected to witness a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led alliance. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the NDA secured 75 out of 126 seats, while the Congress alliance won 16. Counting for the current election will take place on May 4.
