Government of India Seals Tripartite Deal with Nagaland and ENPO

The tripartite accord creates the Frontier Authority, promises autonomy and equitable growth

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough for the Northeast, the Government of India, the Government of Nagaland, and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) on February 5, 2026, signed a landmark tripartite agreement to address decades-old aspirations of the people of Eastern Nagaland and pave the way for lasting peace and development.

The agreement provides for the creation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority, a new administrative body that will enjoy financial autonomy and enhanced decision-making powers. The move is aimed at ensuring targeted governance, faster implementation of welfare measures, and holistic socio-economic progress in the region.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the pact would remove long-standing obstacles to development and empower local communities. He noted that Eastern Nagaland holds significant political and historical importance, and that concerns over equitable justice had persisted since the formation of Nagaland. The new framework, he said, would address those grievances through structured autonomy and inclusive growth.

Officials described the development as part of the Modi government’s sustained push to resolve conflicts in the Northeast through dialogue and peace accords. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah were credited for their commitment to ushering in an era of stability, unity, and progress across the region.

Nagaland Chief Minister termed the agreement “historic,” stating that it fulfills long-pending regional demands through mutual trust and cooperation. The pact is expected to accelerate infrastructure, governance, and economic opportunities, marking a new chapter for Eastern Nagaland’s future.
