Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi, on March 23, filed his nomination from Jorhat, marking his first entry into Assam’s Assembly elections and anchoring a high-profile contest in Upper Assam.

The Congress leader began his day with visits to religious sites, including Jorhat Gurudwara, Burhi Gosain Devalaya, Machkhat Namghar and Tarajan Masjid, projecting a message of inclusivity.

A large rally of opposition alliance supporters accompanied him to the District Commissioner’s office. He later described the election as an opportunity to “cleanse Assam politics” and ensure equitable welfare access. Gogoi also paid tribute to his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He is set to face BJP veteran Hitendranath Goswami, a long-time MLA from the constituency.

Meanwhile, in Barak Valley, Congress candidate Aminur Rashid Choudhury filed from South Karimganj, while BJP minister Krishnendu Paul entered the fray from Patharkandi, both accompanied by large rallies.

In the hill districts, all five ST-reserved seats in Karbi Anglong are witnessing direct contests between the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Congress–All Party Hills Leaders Conference alliance.Key battles include Surjya Rongphar vs Raton Engti (Bokajan), Lunsing Teron vs Sanjeeb Teron (Howraghat), Niso Terangpi vs J.I. Kathar (Diphu), Tuliram Ronghang vs Augustine Enghee (Rongkhang), and Dr. Habe Teron vs Bikram Hanse (Amri).

As nominations close, the focus now shifts fully to campaign strategies, voter outreach and ground-level mobilisation across constituencies. With alliances tested and new faces entering the fray, the coming weeks are expected to shape the direction of Assam’s political contest.
