Gaurav Gogoi Casts Vote in Jorhat: Says People Choosing ‘New Assam’

Congress leader votes with mother, expresses confidence in democratic mandates as Jorhat emerges key battleground

Jorhat: Assam Congress president and Jorhat candidate Gaurav Gogoi cast his vote on Thursday for the 2026 Assembly elections, asserting that the people of the state are voting for a transformed and empowered Assam.

Speaking after voting, Gogoi said, “People are electing a republican, democratic, and empowered Assam.” He added, “Today, it is an important day for Assam, and people are coming forward to make a decision for the state.”

Highlighting the public mood, he said, “The hope in people’s eyes and the way they are expressing their views fearlessly indicate that we will witness an empowered and new Assam on May 4.” He further stated that voters would support “Assam’s civilisation, moral and democratic values.”

Calling the day personally significant, Gogoi said, “I am feeling fortunate that my mother is here with me to vote today. She gave me her blessings.” His mother, Dolly Gogoi, said, “I seek the love and blessings of the people of Jorhat.”

Before heading to the polling station, Gaurav Gogoi paid homage to his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, recalling his legacy and influence on Assam’s political landscape. Family members also expressed their support, with his aunt Lakshami Rani Gogoi voicing hope for the state’s continued progress and extending her blessings to him.

The Jorhat constituency has become one of the most closely watched contests in Upper Assam, where Gogoi is facing sitting BJP legislator Hitendra Nath Goswami. Often referred to as the state’s tea hub, the constituency reflects a complex electoral mix shaped by tea garden workers, indigenous communities, and Assamese-speaking voters, making the outcome particularly significant.

Early trends indicated steady voter participation, with turnout exceeding 18 per cent by 9 am. Voting is being conducted across all 126 Assembly constituencies from morning till evening, while the final results are scheduled to be declared on May 4.

The election sees a direct contest between the Congress-led multi-party alliance and the BJP-led NDA, which is aiming to retain power for a third consecutive term.
