Former AIUDF MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya joins AGP ahead of Assam polls

Sonai MLA inducted into AGP in presence of senior leaders Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta in Guwahati

Guwahati: Former All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya has formally joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), marking a notable political development ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

The former AIUDF MLA joined the regional party on Monday evening at the AGP headquarters in Ambari, Guwahati. The induction took place in the presence of AGP president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta, along with several senior party leaders, including MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita.

Welcoming him into the party, AGP leaders described the move as an important addition to the organisation as preparations gather pace for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

Barbhuiya was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2021 from the Sonai constituency in the Barak Valley as a candidate of the AIUDF. He recently resigned from the party before joining the AGP.

Meanwhile, political discussions are underway over the possibility of more AIUDF leaders switching sides. Sources indicate that AIUDF MLAs Nizam Uddin Choudhury from Algapur and Zakir Hussain Laskar from Hailakandi may also join the AGP in the near future.

The development comes amid increased political activity in the state as parties begin strengthening their ranks ahead of the 2026 polls.
