Elections Bigger Than One Leader”: Gaurav Gogoi Says Congress Confident of Assam Comeback

Senior leader downplays ticket row, says elections are about ending “fear and intimidation” under BJP rule

Guwahati: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday termed the resignation of Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi as “unfortunate,” maintaining that the move was a personal decision despite opportunities extended by the party.

He noted that Bordoloi was given a Lok Sabha ticket from Nagaon two years ago and that a member of his family has been fielded in the current Assembly elections. “This election is much bigger than any one individual,” Gogoi said, adding that the Congress campaign is focused on countering the politics of fear and intimidation under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Downplaying internal disagreements, he said differences over ticket allocation are common and not grounds for leaving a party.

Amid the development, focus has shifted to Prateek Bordoloi, who is set to contest from Margherita. Gogoi expressed support, saying, “All my sympathies are with him… I will call him and let him decide what he wants to do.”

Prateek, currently Co-Chairman of the APCC Social Media and IT Cell, has been preparing for his electoral debut. However, his father’s switch to the BJP, formalised in the presence of Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dilip Saikia, has complicated the situation.

Congress workers in Margherita removed Pradyut’s posters while retaining Prateek’s, indicating a distinction between the two. Still, uncertainty remains, with other aspirants in contention and a final decision on the ticket expected soon.
