ECI to Host National Roundtable Conference with SECs After 27 Years

The conference at Bharat Mandapam on 24th February will strengthen electoral synergies, share technology, and enhance transparency across India.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to organise the National Round Table Conference of the ECI and State Election Commissioners (SECs) on Tuesday, 24th February 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. This marks the first such conference in 27 years, the previous one being held in 1999.

The event will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, in the presence of Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. State Election Commissioners of all States and Union Territories, along with their legal and technical experts, and Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all 36 States and UTs, will participate.

The primary objective of the conference is to foster synergies in the functioning of the ECI and SECs with respect to electoral processes and logistics within their legal frameworks. The deliberations aim to provide a platform for constructive exchange of ideas and reinforce cooperative federalism in electoral management.

During the day-long conference, participants will engage in discussions on several crucial aspects of the electoral process. These include the sharing of technology, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and electoral rolls, as well as strategies for strengthening electoral procedures. Key technological and operational initiatives, notably the recently launched ECINET digital platform and its potential to streamline electoral services, will be examined.

The conference will also address the robustness, transparency, and safeguards of EVMs, alongside a comparative analysis of State and Union Territory-wise eligibility of electors under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to facilitate well-informed deliberations.

State Election Commissions, established under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, are vested with the superintendence, direction, and control of electoral rolls and conduct of elections to Panchayats and Municipal Bodies under Articles 243K and 243ZA.

This conference marks a historic effort to ensure coordinated and robust electoral management across India, leveraging technology and best practices for a stronger democratic process.
