Retired IAS officer Manjit Singh takes charge as the complaints window opens for parties and the public ahead of single-phase voting

Guwahati: As Assam gears up for a single-phase Assembly election, the Election Commission of India has moved to tighten monitoring by appointing retired IAS officer Manjit Singh as Special Observer.
Singh formally took charge at the state headquarters on March 23 and will play a key role in supervising the election process across all constituencies. His responsibilities include ensuring that polling is conducted in a free and fair manner while keeping a close watch on adherence to election norms.
A key part of his mandate is to serve as a direct point of contact for grievances. Political parties, civil society groups and citizens can approach him with complaints related to the electoral process. Officials confirmed that he will be available for in-person meetings daily between 11 AM and 5 PM, alongside a dedicated contact number for communication.
The appointment reflects the Commission’s focus on reinforcing oversight in Assam, where all 126 Assembly seats will go to polls on April 9 in a single phase. By placing a senior observer on the ground, the poll body aims to enhance transparency and ensure swift redressal of concerns during the election period.
With the administrative framework now in place, attention is set to shift towards enforcement and monitoring as campaigning gathers pace.
