Opposition unity gains momentum in Assam as Congress names new candidates

Guwahati: Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia on March 20 filed his nomination as the Indian National Congress candidate from the Nazira Assembly constituency in Sivasagar district, aiming for a fourth consecutive term.
Saikia was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi and other senior party leaders during the filing. Meanwhile, the Congress has released its fourth list of candidates for the 2026 Assembly elections, naming nominees for seven constituencies. The party has fielded Bidisha Neog from Jalukbari, Rohit Pariga from Tangla, Jayanta Borah from Biswanath, Dr. Joy Prakash Das from Nowboicha (SC), Gyandip Mohan from Mahmora, Pran Kurmi from Titabor, and Rahul Roy from Hailakandi.
With candidate announcements gaining pace and alliances taking shape, Assam is set for intense multi-cornered contests across its 126 Assembly seats, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
