Guwahati: A late-night incident at the Baksa district jail in Nikashi has triggered concern after an Assam Police constable sustained a critical gunshot injury in what is suspected to be a self-inflicted act.

The injured personnel has been identified as Gunajit Baishya of the 24th Indian Reserve Battalion, a resident of Baghmara in Bajali district. According to initial information, he used his service weapon and suffered a bullet wound to the chest within the jail premise.

He was first taken to Dr. Rabi Boro Civil Hospital in Mushalpur before being shifted to Guwahati for advanced care. Officials later confirmed that he has been referred to AIIMS, where his condition remains serious under close medical supervision.

Senior officials, including Baksa Superintendent of Police Ujjal Pratim Baruah, reached the spot soon after the incident and initiated an inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the firing.

The episode has drawn added attention as the jail houses several accused linked to a high-profile case involving singer Zubeen Garg. Hospital sources also noted that the constable repeatedly mentioned the singer’s name while being admitted, though the relevance of this remains unclear.

Family members expressed shock, stating they were unaware of any personal or professional issues that could have led to the incident. Authorities have said that all angles, including mental stress and duty-related factors, are being examined as part of the investigation.
