Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the nomination of Terash Gowalla and Jogen Mohan as its candidates in the upcoming 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial elections. The move, cleared by the party’s Central Election Committee. It marks the BJP’s bid to retain political strength in the Upper House of Parliament and reinforce Assam’s representation in New Delhi.
Gowalla, the MLA from Duliajan, and Mohan, an MLA from Mahmora and Cabinet Minister holding portfolios such as Public Works, Hills Areas, Cooperation, and Indigenous and Tribal Faith & Culture, are expected to file their nominations on March 5.
With three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam falling vacant, there is speculation that the third seat may be contested by the BJP’s United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), an NDA ally. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that the BJP will neither contest nor oppose any third-seat candidate from the UPPL, acknowledging the party’s numerical limitations to win all three seats on its own.
UPPL chief Pramod Boro said internal discussions were underway and that the party might announce its candidate soon, with the aim of having its third Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He also highlighted the strategic importance of this seat in advancing long-pending demands such as the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill to enhance the powers of autonomous councils.
