Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta Among 26 AGP Candidates Announced for Assam Polls

Party fields leaders across regions, including Bongaigaon, Barpeta and Barak Valley, blending experience with grassroots representation

Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has stepped up its election preparations by announcing a slate of 26 candidates for the 2026 Assam Assembly polls, signalling its intent to stay relevant across regions.

Among the prominent names, party chief Atul Bora will defend Bokakhat, while senior leader Keshab Mahanta has been nominated from Kaliabor. Diptimoyee Choudhury has been fielded from Bongaigaon, reflecting a conscious effort to bring more women into the electoral fray.

The candidate lineup stretches across key electoral zones, from Upper Assam constituencies such as Tezpur, Sivasagar and Naoboicha to central and lower Assam seats like Barpeta, Goalpara East and Chenga. The party has also placed its bets in Barak Valley segments, including Sonai, Karimganj South, Algapur-Katlichera and Binnakandi.

With a mix of familiar political figures and locally active faces, AGP appears to be focusing on candidates with direct voter engagement. The inclusion of individuals from varied professional backgrounds also points to an attempt to project administrative capability alongside political experience.

The announcement marks a crucial step in AGP’s campaign buildup as it positions itself for a tightly contested election season in Assam.
