Key leaders enter fray; multi-cornered contests emerge across constituencies

Guwahati: The election process for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly polls gathered momentum on March 20, with a surge in nomination filings across the state, according to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer.
As per official data, 109 candidates submitted a total of 209 nomination papers across 35 constituencies on a single day. This pushed the overall tally to 219 nomination papers filed by 116 candidates so far, reflecting a steady rise in electoral activity ahead of the deadline. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, leaving limited time for prospective candidates to join the race.
Several constituencies are already witnessing the contours of multi-cornered contests. In Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, candidates including BJP’s Ranjeet Kumar Dass and CPI(M)’s Manoranjan Talukdar have filed nominations, while Samaguri has seen four candidates entering the fray, signalling intensified competition.
Prominent political figures have also stepped into the electoral arena. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma filed his nomination from Jalukbari. Senior leaders such as Debabrata Saikia (Nazira), Lurinjyoti Gogoi (Khowang), and Prasanta Phukan (Dibrugarh) are also among key contenders.
High-profile contests are taking shape in several constituencies. In Tamulpur, Pramod Boro is set to face Biswajit Daimary, while Barchalla will see a contest between Congress leader Ripun Bora and BJP’s Ritu Baran Sarmah.
In the hill districts, BJP leaders Tuliram Ronghang (Rongkhang) and Dr. Habbey Teron (Amri) filed nominations, while CPI(ML)’s Robi Kumar Phangcho entered the fray from Howraghat.
However, some key constituencies, including Bokakhat, Titabor, and Nalbari, did not record any nominations on the day, indicating that major candidates may file closer to the deadline.
Scrutiny of nominations will follow soon after the submission deadline, with a withdrawal window thereafter. Polling for the 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, while counting will take place on May 4.
With nominations continuing to pour in, Assam’s electoral landscape is rapidly taking shape, setting the stage for a high-intensity political contest.
